A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Adedamola Olajide popularly known as Damola is a first year student studying International law with globalistion at the university of Birmingham. She shares her experience and inspiration. She also gives some advice to all first year students who are yet to come, and who will be studying a similar course.
TELL US ABOUT YOU
Actually, I'm really calm but I like playing a lot which some of my friends see as noisy. My passion is talking, I don't know if I just enjoy conversing with people or just to break the silence because I don't really like quiet environment.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND LIKES?
Oh I really like shopping, sleeping, talking and dancing. Banky W and Phyno are my best artistes. I like the way Phyno raps and I like his Fada Fada, maybe because its gospel. I really really like Lemon green, purple and blue colours. My favourite outfit is short dress with heels or sneakers, they tend to go well everytime I try that look. My favourite brands are Adidas and Forever 21. Anytime I tell people that I like pounded yam and egusi, they always get so surprised maybe it's because I cook jollof rice often. I like it a lot especially if it was prepared by myself. I enjoy talking about general things and about life with friends. My favourite hairstyle is crochet braids, its easy to make and easy to loosen.
WHAT ARE YOUR DISLIKES?
Hmmm... I dislike it when people ask me not to talk, like you don't own my mouth so you can't tell me that. I also don't like it when it's raining because it just annoys me.
YOUR ROLE MODEL/ INSPIRATION
My role model is my grandfather because I like his principles...like when he has something to achieve he makes sure he does that, and then he's just agile and strong. Even in his old age he still works and makes sure everything is done. He doesn't use his old age as an excuse to stop work or as a liability to start relying on his children for money and then he is very influential. While my dad is my inspiration because he has the same job I want to have and I want to beat his record...that is, I want to go higher. He works with the United Nations. We have the same dreams so as he's attaining it I'm following behind.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST DAY OF UNI
It was exciting and at the same time annoying. You won't believe me if I say I got missing. The campus is actually really big, its almost like another small town in the university. I used the school's map for over a week to be able to navigate around campus. I'm so glad that I was able to make friends because it helped me adapt quickly.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM?
Well...this was the only school I applied for. I had a conversation with other people and they had recommended this school because of the academic standards. When I did my own research I really liked what I saw.
WHAT'S YOUR DAILY LIFE LIKE?
The first thing I do when I wake up is pray, then check my phone. After that I freshen up and go to school. Right after school I do some work and hang out with my flatmates. The last two things I do before sleeping is reply to all my messages and pray.
WHAT'S YOUR COURSE LIKE?
Its a mixture of politics, economics and law. I find it interesting learning about how other countries run their government. Its really interesting but it can get really tedious at some point because we do a lot of research and all that.
WHAT'S THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT STUDYING IN THE UNIVERSITY?
You know compared to high school everything is totally new and different. The assessment and evaluation are different. There was a bit of culture shock though. It's really a far distance from where I live to the main campus. I have to walk about 20 mins. It also just seems like everyone wants to get to uni as quickly as possible in the morning with the way they all walk so fast. I don't really like 9am lectures, they are the worst.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE UK?
I think the transportation is really good. The education system is also really good, they are really organised.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE YET TO GO INTO THE UNIVERSITY?
What I would say to them is charge up your ability to discern.
